5th Street Dogborhood
Like the Queen’s guard, black and white fur block my front door-- head pats required to pass. Sasha, my own Secret Service pup, places paws on my shoulders, barks about all the suspects she’s watched in the window that morning.
Mollie, my first in command, huffs until I bend down to greet her. She gives me side-eye for a hot second. Her curled tail moves supersonically.
I walk onto my porch and am greeted by green across the street. It used to be a home for pines and evergreens. Now it’s a tennis ball fetching zone for the lab two blocks over.
Frank leans over my white chain link fence, asks, How’s school going? Big Brother is watching.
Top of the street, blue house guy is parked in my freshly snowblowed spot. He once called the cops--Frank’s dog was barking. I shovel a barricade of snow around his tires.
Irene, sensing my departure, walks out of her gate with her fluffy white companion, Savannah, AKA the conversation bait.
My neighbors know I only brake for dogs.

The details about dogs here help to give the reader a sense of what the speaker is truly investing in here. Is there enough background to set a stage for us here?

I'm good up until Vanessa starts talking about the neighbors. I feel like I need to know some detail about Frank and Irene, other than that they have dogs to get the full effect.

I want a little more anecdote like "I shovel a barricade of snow around his tires." I also don't understand the context of the comment "Big brother is watching?"

Sorry, I meant within the poem. I knew the quote, just didn’t understand why the neighbor said it.
