what the hell
always something cruddy/ forming just beneath
just below the where we know/ just falling under
is it water spilling over drowning you
or something you can’t name
best to weather every situation/ with a grin
upon your face/ throws them off and
makes them wonder/ what the hell you are on
a subtle shift in perceptive
cradling his head in your lap/ going down again
slow motion watching every moment
prolonging/ as if perhaps this extension
would insure duration/ maybe give time to generate a spell
double back/ don’t repeat past misleading gestures
tic-tac roll and groan/ the quiet stairs
taking them two by two/ as if
the days you spent absent in your own space could return
endless stars dancing/ across the ceiling
powered by some strange/ newfangled contraption
strong women don’t need to fear the bridges
that grow up/ or fall down over night
fatherless cat’s/ roaming about
catch them and bring them home
better that any day/ then just being alone
alone/ maybe this time is the charm
gentle/ feed them from your palm
the one that will tonight hold the lover
that’s if he has no aversion
to the cat’s roaming all about your house
hell/ could have come up the stairs behind you
and you would have still called it love
that’s happened before/ for sure but
this time things are looking a little bit brighter
it’s all part of the grand design
maybe/ maybe it’s not after all
then there’s all this thinking you got in your head
while he’s busy undressing your body
jamming your fist in the wall/ part passion
part needing to turn out the light/ without
letting him know your so insecure
it’s your body you are convinced that commits the crime
kick starting all that stuff/ in motion
drama or lack of or something darker deeper
you want to ask him maybe/ back this up
panic setting in/ you’ve forgotten what a touch can do
lemons/ and apples/ and sour things
cell phones and promises/ and bed room dreams
dancing unicorns leaping cross the starry ceiling
the view you know/ you’ll see over his shoulder
mid way through that kiss/ you are reminded
how far south a moment like this can go
your mind says run/ but your body says no
i like what’s happening here
now he feels that subtle disinclination
just a moment/ there’s this hunger
it’s on his skin/ in his breath
has churned the particles inside mad wild
opening the levy/ spilling without warning
beating against your breast/ it’s your heart on overload
pushing and pulsing your skin/ envious and backwards
knees tricking legs tricking thighs tricking hips
pressing your mouth to his
tasting his spit on your tongue
wondering/ about the taste of the rest of him
then you remember those things
quickly you run through the list in your head
the things you told your kids about men
how they are/ what they bring
what it means
realization setting into you brain
which is the predominate organ/ in charge of this thing
lacking the momentum to see this to fruition
that bloody pink muscle won’t let you be this
selfishly denying the body this fun
flooding you with visions of molecules floating
at you/ hiv/ hpv/ the g word and the other one
all heading steadily/ straight to your blood stream
twisting and squirming/ away from his embrace
you retch and spit his saliva/ spraying his face
sorry you say slowly/ slowly edging away
gathering your things to bosom
using your foot to slide his jeans towards him
him/ standing there perplexed palms up
you feel your brain/ shaking your head wordless
you back out the room before words can be spoken
vigilant/ and trident/ and all vociferous words
none of them can explain/ messing up this moment
or saving it for that matter/ depends on your point of reference
still you seek to slip out the house undetected
without hesitation you redress/ re-cloak
hand on handle you come to the conclusion
that you’re a bit lucky/ avoiding that disaster
outside you take a moment to pause
xeric habitation closing in/ no air
no oxygen/ stumbling to recover from the comprehension
he opens the door amid further bewilderment
past him/ rushing/ and slamming the door shut behind
yes this is your home/ yelling in the space
why/ why/ why
you know you’ll need a shrink or a drink
to figure out this one/ but you ‘ve got cats
zagging zipping clipping tripping
follow you heart some other day
for now it’s your brain
ruling the day
this was fun but hard!
